THE BIG PICTURE
The musical goals of the choral program at Payton are to give singers a chance to experience and express themselves through a wide range of repertoire, languages, styles, and performance circumstances. During classtime, we dig deeply into repertoire and techniques appropriate for that skill level. Performances give students an opportunity to share their musical gifts with an audience, gain confidence, and work as a team for towards a collective goal. Choral music is a unique vehicle for creating community and understanding our fractured world. Through lyrics, harmony, melody, and rhythm we find empathy in life stories in a visceral way.
Payton intentionally does NOT do a musical every year. The goal is to provide outstanding singers with a range of experiences. The main stage musicals are every other year. On the years when we are not doing a musical, the Concert Choir performs a major work. In 2014-2015 we sang the Requiem Mass by Gabriel Faure in collaboration with Northside College Prep and in May of 2016, we sang Carl Orff's amazing Carmina Burana with choirs from Jones College Prep and Northside College Prep. In June of 2018 Northside College Prep joined us for a celebration of both Leonard Bernstein (Missa Brevis) and Fred Rogers - both men who used television to teach at the highest levels and share our deepest humanity through music and story.
